On December 28, we're celebrating Maggie Smith's 89th birthday by uncovering little-known details about the Crawley family and their staff from Downton Abbey.

Two films and six seasons.

Fans of the period drama Downton Abbey were treated to that when it had its American premiere on PBS on January 9, 2011.

Yes, it has been more than 12 years since we were first shown the Crawley family's magnificent property in the English countryside, together with their servants.

But then again, who can forget its debut run, when Michelle Dockery's Lady Mary was being deflowered by Theo James's character?

The series, which Julian Fellowes created, went on to become a pop culture phenomenon, launching a number of TV's most adored characters, including Maggie Smith's Dowager Countess, a.k.a. the woman born to become a meme, with her quips and insults.

Other cast members, like Dockery and Dan Stevens, also became major stars. Following the conclusion of its first season in 2015, fans returned to Downton Abbey with the release of the first film in September 2019 and Downton Abbey: A New Era in May 2022.
